WASHINGTON, PA. - The Apprentice School wrestling team opened
their 2007-08 season on Saturday night with a 30-15 victory over
Washington & Jefferson College for the first victory under new
head coach Bruce Shumaker.
Apprentice School opened the match with wins in the first four
weight classes. Freshman Justin Olanowski (Va. Beach,
Va./Kellam) opened with a 3-0 decision at 125 pounds before
sophomore Kevin Hill (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) earned a forfeit
at 133 pounds to give the Builders a 9-0 advantage.
At 141 pounds, freshman Isaiah Myrick (Hampton, Va./Hampton)
recorded the first win by pin in 1:57 which was followed by
sophomore Matt Perry (Chesapeake, Va./Oscar Smith) who earned a 6-1
decision at 149 pounds to lead 18-0.
The host Presidents then recorded wins in three of the next four
weight classes to cut the deficit to 21-15, but victories by
seniors Kendall Ridenour (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) at 197 by
a 5-4 decision and Cecil Lee (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) via pin
at heavyweight in six minutes for the 30-15 victory.
"It was a real good overall effort for a first match," said
Shumaker. "We have lots of things to work on, but for a first
match it was good."
On Sunday the Builders will participate in the Washington &
Jefferson Open Invitational.
