Wrestlers Take Fifth At NCWA National Duals

MURFREESBORO, TN. -- The Apprentice School wrestling team won four out of five dual matches on Saturday to take fifth place out of 16 teams in the first National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Duals held at Middle Tennessee State University.

The Builders went 2-1 in pool action defeating Ohio University 31-20 and Auburn University 50-6 before falling 26-19 to Marion Military Institute (Ala.).

That loss put them into a bracket of second place finishers from the four pools to compete for fifth place.  In that first match they defeated Kansas State University 33-26 to advance and face regional-rival University of Maryland Baltimore County for fifth place.

Trailing 20-17 heading into the heavyweight match, the Builders needed at least a major decision by senior Cecil Lee to take the victory.  Holding an 8-1 advantage with 15 seconds left in the match, Lee caught his opponent in a cradle and scored a pin with two seconds left in the match to give the Apprentice School a 23-20 win.

For the day, two Builders went 5-0 in the duals.  Lee and freshman Ricky Anderson each won all five bouts, with each scoring three pins and a pair of forfeit victories.  Anderson now has a 14-7 record on the year with 11 of those wins by pin mainly at 157 pounds.  Lee raises his record to a stellar 30-6 on the season with 10 of those being by pin at heavyweight.

Freshman Paul Branch and senior Ty Holley each won three bouts on the day.  Branch recorded a forfeit win, one by major decision and one by pin to raise his record to 4-3 at 125 pounds.  Holley earned two of his three wins by major decision and the third via forfeit in his four matches at 141 pounds.

The Builders now sport an 8-6 dual match record and will travel to Scranton, Pa. next Saturday to participate in a tri-match at the University of Scranton with Oswego State (NY) and NCAA Division III 18th-ranked The College of New Jersey starting at noon.
