BUENA VISTA, VA. -- The Apprentice School wrestling team scored
177 points on Saturday with five conference champions to win the
National Collegiate Wrestling Association Mid-Atlantic Conference
title at Southern Virginia University.
The win marked the eighth straight conference title for the
wrestling team and its ninth in the 11 years the team has
participated in the NCWA. They qualified 14 wrestlers for the
upcoming NCWA Nationals that the Apprentice School will
host at Hampton University Convocation Center from March
12-14.
Senior Cecil Lee and freshman Charles Mills each went 3-0 with
three wins by fall to take titles at 285 and 174
respectively. Lee raised his season record to 41-9 and with
those three falls he now holds the career falls record with
49. Mills defeated #3-seed Joe Eassa by a fall in 1:13 to win
the 174 pound title and take his record to 24-12.
Freshman Marcus Chevres (133 pounds - 3-0, pin) won a title
while sophomores Will Harcum (3-0, 2 pins) and Daniel Hare (2-0,
pin) won championships at 165 and 184 respectively.
Six Builders took second place finishes including: Todd
Gular (2-1, pin, 125 lbs.), Will Sexton (2-1, 2 pins, 133), Ty
Holley 2-1 (major dec, tech fall, 141), Matt Perry (2 wins at 149),
Ricky Anderson (2-1, pin, tech fall, 157) and Quentin Bowling
(2-1, pin, 197).
Next up for the wrestling team will be the 2009 NCWA Nationals
at the Hampton University Convocation Center on March 12-14.
