Wrestlers Knock Off Davidson In Final Match At Duals


HAMPTON, VA. - The Apprentice School wrestling team went 1-2 on Friday in the Virginia Duals and continued an interesting run in the event.

For the fifth straight year, the Builders knocked off a NCAA Division I program as they held onto defeat Davidson College 24-21 in their final match.   They have defeated six NCAA Division I programs in that span - Delaware State, James Madison, Millersville, Wagner and Davidson twice.

The match with the Wildcats saw the Builders pull out six-point victories in their wins.  Sophomore Ricky Anderson scored a pin at 149 pounds in 4:42, while senior Matt Perry won his match at 157 pounds by an injury default to put the Builders up 12-11.

After a loss at 165, the Builders scored another six-point win at 174 pounds as junior Austen Damico got a pin in 3:25 to put them ahead 18-14.  Davidson tied the match with a major decision win at 184 pounds before sophomore James Lipford won by forfeit at 197 to give the Builders a 24-18 lead heading into the heavy weight battle. Davidson's Charlie Wolff earned an overtime decision at heavyweight for the 24-21 Apprentice win.

The Builders opened the event by falling to the national champions of the National Junior College Athletic Association in the non-scholarship division Nassau Community College 36-9.  In that match sophomore Marcus Chevres won his match at 133 pounds by pin in overtime and freshman Patrick McIntosh won at 165 pounds by a 9-4 decision.

Their second match was against NCAA Division II Anderson University and the Builders lost 28-13.  Chevres won his match at 133 pounds by a 12-10 decision, senior Ty Holley won at 141 pounds by a 12-3 major decision and Anderson got his second pin of the day in 5:31 at 149 pounds.

Apprentice School will now compete on January 16 in the Ursinus Homecoming Invitational in Pennsylvania.
