Wrestlers Capture 30th Builder Invitational


NEWPORT NEWS, VA. -- For the first time in three years, the Apprentice School wrestling team captured the team title at the 30th annual Apprentice School Invitational on Saturday. 

The Builders amassed 146.5 points to outdistance two-time champion University of Central Florida with 131 points while University of Maryland Baltimore County was third with 121.5 as 23 teams competed in the event.

Winning individual championships for the Builders were senior Ty Holley at 141 pounds, sophomore Ricky Anderson at 149 pounds and freshman Patrick McIntosh at 165 pounds.

Holley won the 141 pound class after coming in second place last year at this weight.  The senior from Erwin, NC won his first two matches by fall in 6:43 over Kevin Williams of Scranton and Andrew Greco also of Scranton in 2:03.  He took the title by a medical forfeit over Kendall Albert of Kennesaw State.  Holley was also named the Champion of Champions in the event and is 17-5 on the season.

Anderson also advanced to the finals at 149 with a pair of wins by fall.  He defeated TJ Gillin of UCF in 1:58 and Daniel Carr of UMBC in 1:26 to advance to face Wade McCorkel of Penn State Club in the finals where he won 7-3.  The Chesapeake, Va. native is currently 16-3 on the year.

McIntosh won the 165 pound title defeating a pair of teammates en route to the championship.  The Sherrills Ford, NC native started with a win in 2:08 over Paul Rajan of Scranton before defeating Nick Appleby of Middle Tennessee State 8-1 to advance to the semifinals.  He faced teammate Montrell Barbine there and won 3-0 before defeating Anthony Damico by a medical forfeit.  McIntosh is currently 26-11 on the year.

Freshman Kevin Gray took second at heavyweight, while senior Matt Perry (157), Barbine (165), senior Will Harcum (174) and sophomore Quentin Bowling (197) took third place.

The Builders now travel to Middle Tennessee State University next Saturday to participate in the second annual National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Duals.
