Wrestlers Finish Second At NCWA National Duals

SHELBYVILLE, TENN. - The Apprentice School wrestling team went 4-1 on Saturday at the 2010 National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Duals as they lost 27-15 to Marion Military Institute in the championship match at Calsonic Arena in Shelbyville, Tennessee.

The championship match saw the teams trade off the lead several times through the dual.  After falling at 125 pounds, Marcus Chevres earned a win by fall at 133 and Ty Holley won by an 8-1 decision at 141 pounds to put the Builders up 9-3.  MMI won the next three bouts to take a 12-9 lead going into the 174 pound match.  Senior Will Harcum scored a 6-2 decision to tie the dual at 12-all.  Following a loss at 184 pounds, freshman Stuart Roes won an 12-6 decision at 197 pounds to tie the dual again at 15-all.  MMI scored wins by fall in the last two bouts for the final margin of 27-15.

In the semifinals, they defeated West Chester University 30-15.  The Builders opened up with three straight wins by fall with Todd Gular, Marcus Chevres and Ty Holley winning to give the Builders an 18-0 lead after 141 pounds.  West Chester made a run winning three of the next four bouts by major decision to cut the deficit to 21-12 after 174 pounds.  Junior Austen Damico picked up a 5-3 victory at 184 pounds  to give the Builders a 24-12 lead.  Victories by Daniel Hare at 235 and LA Colon at heavyweight gave the Apprentice School a 30-15 win.

In its first match of the day, the Builders opened with a 53-3 victory over the University of Dayton to win a school record 13th dual match of the season.  After opening with a win by forfeit at 125 and a 16-0 technical fall victory by Marcus Chevres at 133 pounds, the Builders reeled off four straight wins by fall.  Ty Holley won in 3:44 at 141 followed by Ricky Anderson winning in 42 seconds at 149 pounds.  Freshman Freeman Ward earned a win in 1:38 at 157 pounds and fellow freshman Patrick McIntosh win in 1:16 at 165 pounds to give the Builders a commanding 35-0 lead with five bouts to go.

Against Oakland University (Mich.) the Builders prevailed 26-21.  After losing at 125 pounds, the Builders won seven of the next eight bouts to take a commanding 26-9 advantage.  In that run was an 18-7 major decision victory for senior Will Harcum at 174 pounds and a win by fall in 32 seconds by Anderson at 149 pounds to highlight that stretch.

They closed out pool play with a 43-15 win over the host team for the event - Middle Tennessee State University.  Similar to its match against Oakland, the Builders lost at 125 pounds before winning eight of the next nine bouts.  The first four of those wins were by fall and all were in under 2:30 to put the Builders up 24-3 heading into the 165 pound match.

Apprentice School (16-5) will now compete next weekend in DuBois, Pa. at the first U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Invitational Tournament.  A dual night will be on Friday, Feb. 5, while the individual tournament will take place on February 6.
