Builders Tied For Lead At NCWA Nationals After Round One

HAMPTON, VA. -- After the first session of the 2010 National Collegiate Wrestling Association Nationals at Hampton University Convocation Center, the Apprentice School currently shares first place with the University of Central Florida with 22 points on Thursday.

Southern Illinois-Edwardsville is third with 19.5 points, followed by Grand Valley State with 19 as University of Maryland Baltimore County and Marion Military are tied for fifth with 16 points each.

The Builders started strongly in the event as sophomore Todd Gular scored a pin in 1:21 over Adam Crow of Marion Military Institute in the 125 pound weight class.  Sophomore Marcus Chevres, the 2009 NCWA Runnerup at 133 pounds, started his weight class with a pin in 5:14 over David Hommell of Penn State DuBois.

Senior Ty Holley, a returning NCWA All-American from 2009, entered the 141 pound weight class as the top-seed and started with a pin in 39 seconds over Chris Stewart of Georgia Southern.

The falls kept coming as freshman Patrick McIntosh pinned Michael Lovette from the University of Florida in 4:15 at 157 pounds, while senior Will Harcum pinned Robert Lee Worley of Vermont in 1:04 at 165 pounds.  That pin for Harcum broke the single season record for pins raising Harcum's total to 26.

Kevin Gray closed out the pin contingent in the first round with a win in 2:09 over Daniel Avery of Northeastern.

Winning by decisions in their opening matches were sophomore Anthony Damico at 174 pounds where he used a reversal with 24 seconds left in his match for a 7-5 victory over Corey Graham of University of Massachusetts.  Also at 174, Malachi Outlaw pulled out a 2-0 decision over Tavarius Hicks of Florida A&M.

Three wrestlers advanced by either forfeit (Ricky Anderson at 149 pounds), injury default (Matt Perry at 157) or a bye (Ty Ford at 125 pounds).
