Builders Sit Second After Day Two Of NCWA Nationals
HAMPTON, VA. – After two days of wrestling at the Hampton University Convocation Center, the Apprentice School currently sits in second after two days of the 2010 National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships.
Central Florida leads the event with 100 points, followed by the Builders (84.5), SIU-Edwardsville (73.5), Grand Valley State (65.5) and US Naval Prep (59.5) to round out the top five.
With the results of Friday, the Builders will have seven wrestlers earn All-American honors as four are in the semifinals and three more are currently in the wrestleback rounds. With those seven, the Builders have amassed 70 NCWA All-Americans in its 12 years in the association.
The Builders’ semifinalists begin with sophomore Marcus Chevres at 133 pounds. Chevres earned his semifinal spot with a 9-1 major decision victory over Xenepher Austin of Marion Military Institute. Chevres will face Brendan Murphy of SIU-Edwardsville who was the fourth seed in the 133 pound weight class. The Norfolk, Va. native will enter the semifinals with a 32-5 record.
Senior Ty Holley pulled one of two late victories out for the Builders as he scored a 5-3 victory over Kendall Albert of Kennesaw State in sudden victory. After a 3-all score in regulation, Holley recorded a takedown 24 seconds into sudden victory to earn his semifinal spot against Raymond Borja of the US Naval Prep Academy. The Erwin, NC native will enter the semifinals with a 32-6 record.
Fellow senior Matt Perry pulled out the second dramatic win for the Builders in the quarterfinal round. He used a takedown with two seconds left in regulation to knock out the fourth-seed Eric Powell of Williamson Trade 3-1 at 157 pounds. Perry had earlier defeated the fifth-seed in the event and will now take on two-time champion Peter Rose of Southern Virginia University in the semifinals. The Chesapeake, Va. native will enter the semifinals with a 33-13 record and is guaranteed of being a three-time NCWA All-American.
In the bottom half of the 157 pound draw, freshman Patrick McIntosh scored a pin in 44 seconds over Jeremy Edward of Illinois State to give the Builders half of the draw at 157 pounds. He’ll face second-seeded Andrew Ritchie of Northampton Community College in the semifinal round. The Sherrills Ford, NC native will enter the semifinals with a 39-14 record.
Five wrestlers had a late round match to join those four as NCWA All-Americans. Senior Will Harcum lost in his quarterfinal match and rebounded to pin Cody Bollinger of Gavilian College (Calif.) in 1:16 at 165 pounds. Harcum finished fifth last year at 165 pounds and will end his career a two-time NCWA All-American. With three wins on Saturday Harcum will break the single-season victory mark set last year by Cecil Lee with 46 as he is now 44-10.
Sophomore Quinten Bowling won all three of his matches on Friday to clinch an All-American honor. His final match was a 4-2 victory over Shawn Sweaney of the U.S. Military Academy Prep School at 184 pounds to earn his spot on the All-American stand. The Newport News, Va. native will enter the consolation quarterfinals with a 21-18 record.
Freshman Stuart Roes also went 3-0 on Friday to make his way to the All-American stand. The Staunton, Va. native defeated Ryan Bok of Colorado-Ft. Collins 4-3 to make his way to Saturday’s consolation quarterfinals. He will enter with a 23-19 into his Saturday morning match after his two wins by pin and one by decision on Friday.
The semifinals and consolation quarterfinals will begin at 9 am on Saturday while the finals are scheduled for a 4 pm start. You can follow the event online at www.ncwa.net/nationals.
