Wrestlers Take Lead After Round 3 Of NCWA Nationals

HAMPTON, VA.—The Apprentice School opened the second day of the 2010 National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championships winning five matches in the consolation round and taking over the lead after round three on Friday morning.

Apprentice School has 42 points to hold a lead over Central Florida (41.5), Grand Valley State (38.5) and SIU-Edwardsville (36.5) with Marion Military (29) rounding out the top five.

Sophomore Todd Gular started the wins at 125 pounds defeating Jon Taylor of New Hampshire 8-5.  He’ll next face Clint Grunalt of Oakland University in the third round of consolations.

Ricky Anderson bounced back from a second round loss last night and pinned Jeremy Filippelli of Oakland University in 1:10 at 149 pounds.  He’ll face conference rival Daniel Carr of University of Maryland Baltimore County in the third round of consolations.

Quinten Bowling scored a win over conference rival Joe Eassa of UMBC by an 11-5 decision at 184 pounds to advance to a third round consolation match tonight at 5 pm.

Freshmen Stuart Roes (197) and Kevin Gray (285) scored wins by pin in their first consolation round matches on Friday.  Roes pinned Scott Robbins on Michigan in 1:10, while Gray pinned Jacob Powell of Central Florida in 1:20 at heavyweight.

The quarterfinal round and third round of consolations will begin at 5 pm today, while the fourth round of consolations will be at approximately 8 pm at the Hampton University Convocation Center.
