Wrestlers Take UMBC Duals For Second Straight Year With 3-0 Performance

CATONSVILLE, MD. – The Apprentice School wrestling team went 3-0 on Sunday in the UMBC Retriever Duals to win the event for the second year in a row.  They defeated West Chester (27-16), the hosts University of Maryland Baltimore County (26-21) and the U.S. Naval Academy Prep School (42-14) to raise their dual match record to 10-3.

In the opening bout against West Chester University, the Builders won five of the first six bouts to take an 18-4 lead on the strength of a win by fall for senior Ricky Anderson at 157 pounds in 2:30.  West Chester answered with wins in three of the next four bouts to bring the deficit to 24-16 but a win by Stuart Roes at 197 pounds via a fall in 2:08 slowed the comeback attempt and put the Builders up 24-13.  Freshman Ian Jones carded a 2-1 win at heavyweight to give the Builders the dual win 27-16.

The next match was the anticipated dual with the host University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers.  Apprentice School opened the dual with a quick start winning the first four bouts all with bonus points as junior Ty Ford and senior Marcus Chevres scored major decisions, while freshman Stuart Briscoe and junior Kyle Spruill recorded falls in 3:34 and 4:14 respectively.  The hosts bounced back with four straight wins of their own to cut the deficit to 19-18 after Eldar Muradov won by fall in 25 seconds at 184.  Roes gave the Builders a key bonus point victory with an 11-2 major decision at 197 pounds to lead 23-18.  UMBC earned a decision at 235, but Jones clinched the dual win with a 9-4 win at heavyweight and a 26-21 Apprentice School win.

The final dual pitted the Builders against the U.S. Naval Academy Prep School as the Builders won the dual 42-12 to clinch the team trophy.  Spruill, Anderson and Roes all won their second bouts on the day by fall to go with four wins by forfeit for the dual match victory.

Apprentice School had five wrestlers go 3-0 on the day and one finished 2-0: Roes (two wins by fall and a major decision); Spruill  (two by fall and a decision);  Ford  (decision, major decision and forfeit);  Chevres  (decision, major decision and forfeit);  Jones  (two decisions and forfeit);  Anderson (pair of wins by fall).

That closed out the 2011 portion of the schedule for the wrestling team as they'll next see action on January 7 at the Waynesburg Invitational in Pennsylvania.
