The Apprentice School wrestling team went 1-1 in the opening day of the Virginia Duals at the Hampton Coliseum. They lost to second-seeded Nassau Community Colllege 49-6 and rebounded in the first round of consolations with a 30-12 win over NCAA Division II Anderson University (SC).
With the results of today, the Apprentice School (11-4) will advance to Saturday's consolation semifinals where they'll face the loser of top-seeded College at Brockport and fourth-seeded University of Central Florida at 4 pm.
Against Anderson, the Builders opened their scoring with senior Marcus Chevres recording a win by fall in 4:05 at 133 pounds and freshman Sterling Briscoe recorded his second win of the day with a 5-2 decision at 141 to give the Builders a 9-6 advantage. Following a pair of decisions for Anderson to lead 12-9, the Builders ran the table with wins by junior BJ Compton at 165 (2-1), sophomore Montrell Barbine at 174 (fall in 3:14), freshman Justin Martz at 184 (8-2), junior Stuart Roes at 197 (8-7) and freshman Ian Jones at heavyweight (forfeit).
The Builders opened the tournament by facing the second-seeded Nassau Community College Lions. Nassau entered the tournament ranked eighth nationally in the National Junior College Athletic Association and have seven wrestlers ranked in the top 10 nationally. They scored a 49-6 win over the Builders as freshman Sterling Briscoe won by fall in 1:45 over Jayson Kim at 141 pounds for the lone Builder victory.
