Wrestlers Take Second In Builder Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Apprentice School wrestling team came out of the 12-team Builder Invitational on Saturday with a pair of second-place individual finishers and riding the depth of five wrestlers taking third place ended up in second as a team at Woodside High School.

Marion Military Institute won the event with 144 points, followed by the Builders (135.5), University of Maryland Baltimore County (130.5), University of Scranton (90.5) and South Carolina (70.5) to round out the top five.

Junior BJ Compton took second place at 165 pounds as he went 2-1 on the weekend.  He opened with a win by fall in 2:01 over third-seeded Junior Monzey of UMBC before knocking off Van Grimes of VMI by a 6-3 decision.  In the finals, he lost by fall to Mike Ahearn of South Carolina who was later named the Champion of Champions by the individual weight class winners of the event. 

Freshman Ian Jones also was 2-1 to finish second at heavyweight.  All three of his matches were decided by falls in the second period.  He opened with a win in 3:14 over Wesley Mummert of Penn State Beaver and then defeated the third-seed Luke Genovese of Scranton in 3:42.  In the finals he lost to top-seeded Matt Baker of Marion Military Institute in 4:10.

Five wrestlers finished third which proved big to give the Builders second place in the event.  Senior Will Sexton took third at 157 pounds winning his third-place match by fall in 6:50 over second-seeded Everett Colbert of Middle Tennessee State.  For the day Sexton was 4-1 with a pair of wins by fall.  Sophomore Montrell Barbine was third at 174 going 3-1 on the day and winning his third place match by fall in 2:11 over second-seeded Steven Fowler of South Carolina. 

Freshman Justin Martz was 3-1 winning all of his matches by fall, including a third-place match victory in 2:42 over Terrance Smith of Marion Military Institute.  Junior Stuart Roes was one of the busier wrestlers going 5-1 on the day to take third at 197 with three of the wins coming by fall.  Fellow junior Kevin Gray was also busy going 5-1 with three wins by fall at 235 pounds to take third.  He got to avenge an earlier loss to Robert Clancy of MMI by defeating him 10-4 for third place.

Next up for the Builders will be the 2012 National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Duals on Friday and Saturday in Dalton, Georgia.
