Builders Take Sixth At NCWA National Duals

DALTON, GA. – The Apprentice School wrestling team went 2-2 on Saturday and finished sixth out of 24 teams in the NCWA National Duals held at the Northwest Georgia and Trade Convention Center.

Apprentice School opened the final day with a third battle with the University of Central Florida.  Each team won a dual as the Builders scored a win in the Virginia Duals two weeks ago, while UCF won a November encounter at the Knight Duals in Orlando.

After alternating wins in the first five matches with the Knights taking a 15-6 lead after 157, the Builders won five of the final six matches behind falls from BJ Compton at 165 (1:17) and Ian Jones at heavyweight (4:24) to give the Builders a 27-18 win.

In their quarterfinal match against University of Maryland Baltimore County, the Retrievers pulled out a 22-21 victory as they won the final five bouts.  Apprentice School jumped out quickly with a pair of wins by fall from Ty Ford at 125 (2:55) and Marcus Chevres at 141 (4:02) and a pair of decisions from Dwayne Roes at 133 (13-8) and Sterling Briscke at 149 (6-1) to lead 18-0.

That put them in the bracket for 5th place where they started against Mercer University.  Apprentice School trailed 7-0 after the first two bouts, but put together a streak of four straight wins as Chevres scored a decision at 141 (10-8), Kyle Spruill got a technical fall victory at 149 (19-4), Will Sexton earned a win at 157 (6-0) and Compton scored a win at 165 (7-6) to put the Builders up 14-7.  After a pair of Mercer wins cut the lead to 14-13, Apprentice School snared a pair of six-point wins as Stuart Roes won by injury default at 197 and Willie Crawford won by forfeit at 235 to clinch the dual and the eventual 26-19 win.

The fifth-place match was a rematch of Friday's final match for the Builders against Lindenwood-Belleville where a late flurry fell short for the Builders as they lost 27-22 to the Lynx for fifth place.  Chevres scored a major decision at 133 (9-2), Spruill earned a decision win at 157 (14-8), Compton won at 165 (9-5) while Justin Martz and  Gray scored six-point wins at 184 and 235 respectively.

On the weekend, Compton went 5-0 and Chevres went 5-1 to lead the team in victories. Spruill was 4-0 on the day, while four Builders had three wins each in Ford (3-3), Sexton (3-2), Martz (3-2) and Stuart Roes (3-3).

Apprentice School (15-8) now will travel to Laurinburg, N.C. next Saturday to face St. Andrews University and East Carolina University in a tri-meet held at St. Andrews.
