LAURINBURG, NC – The Apprentice School wrestling team went to NCAA Division II St. Andrews University and scored a 31-12 victory over the Knights in a dual match on Saturday afternoon.
It was scheduled to have been a tri-match with St. Andrews and East Carolina, but the Pirates forfeited the second match to raise the Builders record to 17-8 on the year.
Ty Ford opened the dual with St. Andrews scoring a 12-8 victory and senior Marcus Chevres followed with a win by fall in 2:50 to give the Builders a 9-0 lead early. Following a win by St. Andrews at 141, the Builders reeled off wins in the next five bouts. Junior Kyle Spruill earned a decision at 149 (8-3) before bonus point wins by Sterling Briscoe at 157 (fall in 6:50) and Will Sexton at 165 (major decision 12-3) gave the Builders a 22-3 lead.
Junior BJ Compton kept the run going with a decision win at 174 pounds (7-3) before freshman Justin Martz recorded a win by fall in four minutes at 184 to push the lead to 31-3. The hosts earned wins in the final two bouts to make the final 31-12.
With the wins, the Builders are now 17-8 and will next see action on Feb. 11 against Penn State DuBois in a dual match prior to the USCAA National Invitational on Feb. 12 at Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State University.
