ON THE MAT: The Apprentice School wrestling team had a very busy Saturday with six dual matches in the Electric City Duals hosted by the University of Scranton and won the event for the fourth time in the last five years by going undefeated.
They opened with a 36-13 win over regional-rival University of Maryland Baltimore County. They followed that with three matches against U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association members by defeating Penn College (42-12), Penn State DuBois (27-13) and Penn State Beaver (52-3).
The final two matches pushed the Builders as they faced NCAA Division III 15th-ranked Wilkes University squad that entered the weekend winners of 19 straight dual matches dating back to November 2012. Apprentice School opened that dual winning the first four matches, with Sterling Briscoe winning by fall at 141 in 1:38 to help push the Builders to a 15-0 lead after 149.
Wilkes responded by winning the next four matches with three of those being by fall to take a 21-15 lead after 184 when Alex Pullen won by fall in 4:50.
Sophomore Josh Rodriguez helped get the Builders trailing 21-18 after his 6-4 win by decision at 197 pounds. Apprentice School heavyweight Ian Jones then got a win by forfeit as the Builders knocked off Wilkes 24-21 to snap a 26-match winning streak for the Colonels.
The final dual of the day for the Builders saw them face tournament host University of Scranton. Rob Styron opened the match with a win by fall in 2:10 at 125 pounds for an early 6-0 lead. Scranton got bonus point wins in the next three bouts, two of those by fall, to take a 15-6 lead after 149 pounds. The teams alternated wins in the next four bouts, Apprentice School took two wins by fall from Brian Beatson (157/1:24) and Phillip Porto (174/1:44) to trail 21-18 heading into 197 pounds.
Rodriguez and Jones came through again as Rodriguez scored a 2-1 decision and Jones won 6-4 to give the Builders a 24-21 win and the tournament title.
"It was a great day for us to win this tournament," said Rodriguez who was 6-0 on the day. "We have lots of work to do, but this is definitely a good way to get us started this year."
- Jones was 5-0, while Porto was 5-1 on the day for the Builders to join Rodriguez with five or more wins on Saturday.
- With the wins, the Builders have set a school record for most wins to start a season (7) and consecutive dual match wins (8).
- Wilkes had not lost a dual match in 364 days having lost on November 10, 2012 in their John Reese Duals to SUNY Cortland
The Builders return to Pennsylvania next weekend for a tri-match at West Chester University where they'll face the hosts along with the University of Delaware starting at 7 pm.
