ON THE MAT: Two Apprentice School wrestlers finished in the top four in their weight classes as the Builders competed on Saturday in the Shorter College Open.
Junior Sterling Briscoe went 4-1 at 149 pounds to finish second in the bracket. He won his first two bouts by fall over Johnathan Pickens of Darton College (3:15) and Mike Fleming of University of Central Florida (3:35). His next match was against the top-seed Orlando Medina of Brewton Parker College and Briscoe won by a 15-5 major decision. Briscoe made the finals with a 4-2 decision over Robbie Collum of Brewton Parker before falling 12-10 to Jake Williams of Cumberland College in the final.
Fellow junior Ian Jones went 3-2 and took fourth place at heavyweight. He opened the tournament with a 4-2 decision over Tracy Jewett of Life University. A 4-3 decision over Jake Shumpert of Brewton Parker College put Jones into the semifinals where he lost to Courtney Freeman of University of Cumberlands by fall in 6:59. In the consolation bracket he decisioned Shane Haller of the University of Central Florida 5-3 and then lost to Christian McLean of UNC Pembroke by fall for third place.
Other standout showings were by Chris Kennedy at 165 pounds going 3-2 with a major decision and tech fall win. Three Builders won two matches each - Dwayne Roes (133), Derek Burhenn (141) and Phillip Porto (165).
OFF THE MAT
- With his first round win at heavyweight, Jones set a school record for most consecutive wins to start a season with his 13th. The previous record of 12 was held by current assistant coach Will Harcum to start the 2009-10 season.
- Jones leads the team in wins with his 15-2 record, followed by Philip Porto (14-5), and Jacob Michael (11-3).
