EVENT: New Standard Corporation Invitational

LOCATION: York College/York, PA

RESULTS: 11TH of 13 teams

ON THE MAT: The Apprentice School made its annual trip to York College (PA) for the New Standard Corporation Invitational and walked into a loaded tournament field.  Three of the top 12 NCAA Division III teams participated in the event and 13 nationally-ranked wrestlers were spread throughout the 10 weight classes.

For the Builders, sophomores Jacob Michael and Shane Smith placed sixth at 125 and 133 pounds respectively.  Michael opened with a 9-0 major decision over Earl Roberts of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and advanced to the semis with a win by fall in 6:56 over eventual third-place finisher Henry Beaman of Ithaca.  He lost to eventual champion Asher Kramer of Brockport 12-9 before falling into sixth place.

Smith took the same route as Michael as he advanced to the semifinals before losing his first bout at 133.  He opened with a 23-8 win over Jake Powell of Ithaca College before edging Sean Kellett of University of Maryland Baltimore County 10-9.  He lost by fall to eventual runner-up Ray Yagloski of Johns Hopkins in 2:48 in the semifinals before falling into sixth place.

Kyle Lowry was the other multiple winner on Saturday as he was 3-2 at 157 and was one match away from placing at that weight. He won his first two matches convincingly with a 14-0 win over Geoffery Bilder of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and 17-1 over Hugh Bahe of Johns Hopkins before falling to the eventual champion Everet Desilets of Johnson & Wales in the quarterfinals. Lowry scored a win by decision in the fourth round of the consolation bracket before falling a round short of placing.

Johnson & Wales edged Ithaca by two points (119.5-117.5) to win the tournament title with Delaware Valley College coming in a distant third with 99 points.
