IN BRIEF - The Apprentice School opened competition on Friday morning at the 34th annual Virginia Duals and split a pair of matches against NCAA Division II schools from South Carolina. Apprentice School lost the opener 32-13 to Limestone College and then rebounded to defeat Anderson University 28-23. The Builders advance to the consolation semifinals at 4 pm on Saturday.
ON THE MAT – VS. LIMESTONE
The Builders opened action at 11 am against the third-seeded Limestone Saints from Gaffney, SC. Limestone, making its first appearance in the Virginia Duals, started quickly scoring wins by fall in three of the first four matches to take an early 21-0 lead after 149 pounds.
Chris Kennedy got the Builders on the board with an 11-3 major decision win over Storm Gaffney to bring the margin to 21-4. Limestone responded with a pair of major decision wins at 165 and 174 to push the advantage back up to 29-4.
Apprentice School scored wins in two of the final three bouts as CW Sorey earned a 5-3 decision over David Kieta at 184 pounds and Ian Jones scored a fall in 4:02 at heavyweight over Jeremiah Parker to make the final 32-13.
ON THE MAT – VS. ANDERSON
The Builders started this match down 3-0 early as the Trojans scored a 5-2 decision win at 125 pounds. Apprentice School rebounded for an early 4-3 lead as Shane Smith recorded a 19-10 major decision win over Keenan Simmons.
Anderson then went on a run as the Trojans got bonus point wins in three of the next four matches to lead 23-4 after 165 pounds.
Phillip Porto started the comeback for the Builders as he won by fall at 174 pounds in 1:18 to get the Apprentice School back 23-10. Limestone had a small lineup and forfeited the final three weights to give the Builders a 28-23 win.
BEHIND THE SCORESHEET
- The match with Limestone was a revenge match for the Builders as they were eliminated in last year's Virginia Duals by a 28-25 score.
- This was the first-ever meeting with Limestone College.
- With his two wins on Friday, Ian Jones broke a three-way tie for eighth place on the Apprentice School career wins list. Jones is 94-24 in his career through two and a half years and is now in eighth place alone.
- Joining Jones with 2-0 records on Friday was Sorey at 184 pounds with a decision win and a forfeit victory.
Apprentice School returns to action on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm when they face the loser of the UNC Pembroke-Ferrum College semifinal in the consolation semifinals. If they win at 4, they'll wrestle for third place at 6 pm.
