Wrestlers Take Second In Builder Invitational - Rodriguez Earns Outstanding Wrestler

TOURNAMENT: 34TH Builder Invitational

WHERE: Woodside High School/Newport News, VA

ON THE MAT: The Apprentice School hosted its 34th annual Builder Invitational tournament on Saturday at Woodside High School in Newport News and took second place in the 14-team event.

Sophomore Josh Rodriguez and junior Ian Jones each went 3-0 to win the 197-pound and heavyweight class respectively.  Sophomores Jacob Michael and Derek Burhenn were second at 125 and 133 pounds respectively as the Builders had seven wrestlers finish in the top four in their weight classes.

Ferrum College scored 165.5 points to outdistance the Builders who amassed 121.5 points in the team standings.  West Virginia Tech came in third with 115, while Marion Military Institute (90) and University of Scranton (79.5) rounded out the top five.

Rodriguez scored a pair of decisions and won by fall en route to the 197-pound title.  He opened with a 4-3 win over Greg Humphrey of East Carolina in the second round.  Rodriguez then avenged an earlier loss to Darreus McCrea of Ferrum by scoring a win by fall with one second left in the match.  In the final he earned a 10-5 decision over Chris Silakoski of Scranton.

Jones went 3-0 at heavyweight with two wins by fall and a decision for his title.  He opened with a pair of wins by fall in 1:08 over Michael Gordon and 2:57 over Jon Boarman of West Virginia Tech to advance to the final.  In the championship match he decisioned Tate Dulany of Ferrum 6-2.

Michael had a pair of wins by fall to advance to the final where he lost by a 10-2 count at 125, while Burhenn was 3-1 with wins by fall (in 58 seconds), medical forfeit and a major decision to advance to the final at 133.

  • With his three wins today, Jones is nearing the 100 wins mark for his career as he now sits with a 98-24 mark.  He moved into seventh place on the all-time wins list just one behind former teammate Kyle Spruill and two behind two-time NCWA National Champion Darrick Walker (1996-2000).
  • For his efforts on Saturday, Rodriguez was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament by the coaches.

The Builders will participate starting on Friday morning at the NCWA Collegiate Cup Duals in Dalton. Georgia.
