STANDING: 8th out of 29 Division I teams
ON THE MAT: The Apprentice School finished day two of the 2014 National Collegiate Wrestling Association Division I National Championships sitting in eighth place and will finish with one NCWA All-American.
Junior Ian Jones will become a three-time All-American this weekend as he won his last match on Friday night by fall in 5:26 over Kevin Madson of University of Central Washington in the round to determine the top eight. After losing in the quarterfinals, Jones won by fall to earn his 40th victory on the year against eight losses.
Three Builders made it to the final round before All-American honors and suffered their final losses of the season. Sophomores Patrik Foxworth (157), Josh Rodriguez (197) and junior Phillip Porto (174) just missed the All-American rounds. Foxworth went 4-2, while Porto was 3-2 with two wins by fall and Rodriguez was 2-2 with one win by fall in the tournament.
Grand Canyon University qualified seven for the finals and is the overall leader with 210.5 points, followed by Shorter University (145.5) and Liberty University (132).
BEHIND THE BRACKETS:
- With his three wins thus far, Jones will finish his junior season in third place in the career wins list for the Builders. He broke a tie with Matt Perry for fourth as he now has 113 career wins.
- Jones will earn the 81st NCWA All-American honor for the Builders since 1999.
