Wrestling squares off against Minnesota State-Moorhead to start Virginia Duals

The Apprentice School wrestling team opens 2016 competition at the 36th annual Virginia Duals on Friday, January 8th , as they square off against third-seeded Minnesota State-Moorhead at 11 am in the Hampton Coliseum. If the Builders advance, they would wrestle again Saturday at 2 pm.  A loss would see the team wrestling again on Friday at 1 pm.

The Dragons enter the Duals with a 2-1 record and are ranked 7th in the latest NCAA Division II - Super Region III rankings. Minnesota State-Moorhead opened its season with a close 15-16 loss to Concordia College (Minn.) on November 18th, but bounced back with wins over St. John's (Minn.) 29-15 on December 2nd and LIU Post (N.Y.) 23-12 on December 4th.

The Apprentice School owns a 6-2 record coming into the Duals and is ranked 7th in the latest National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) rankings. Freshman 125-pounder Michael Boyd owns a 15-4 record to lead the team and is ranked second in the NCWA in his weight class. Freshman 133-pounder Aaron Bright has a 12-4 record, junior 157-pounder Tyrell Watkins is 13-7, and senior 197-pounder Josh Rodriguez, ranked third in the NCWA in his weight class, is 11-5.

Kutztown (Pa.) is the top seed, Ferrum (Va.) is second, and Liberty (Va.) is the fourth seed. The Flames fell to UNC Pembroke 23-14 in last year's Championship match and are ranked second in the NCWA.

Other teams in the American College Division bracket include: Camden County (N.J.), Central Florida (ranked first in the NCWA), and Anderson (S.C.).
