Michael Allen enters his second year as the Director of Athletics. He came to The Apprentice School after serving as the Athletic Director and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Norfolk Christian High School.
Over his tenure at Norfolk Christian, the Ambassadors captured 35 TCIS Championships and seven VISAA State Championships. Allen was instrumental in overseeing the addition of Football and Boys Lacrosse to the NCH athletic department. He also served as the President of the TCIS and was the Eastern Region representative on the VIAAA State AD's Board of Directors.
As Head Boys Basketball coach, Allen guided Norfolk Christian to three 20-win seasons, three TCIS Regular Season Titles and four TCIS Tournament Championships. He was twice named the VISAA Division 2 Coach of the Year, was selected as the TCIS Coach of the Year, and Norfolk Sports Club Bob Bates Scholastic Coach of the Year. The program captured back-to-back VISAA Division 2 State Titles in 2010 and 2011. Allen ended his tenure ranked second on the Norfolk Christian all-time win list.
During his first year at The Apprentice School, Allen has been working diligently in establishing and creating a new culture - ‘The Builder Way’. This is being implemented through showing appreciation of the commitment of apprentice-athletes, strategic hiring practices of those who understand the demands of being a Builder athlete, and creating a first-class collegiate athletic experience.
Allen has overseen Branding & Marketing efforts through a redesigned athletics website, establishing a partnership with Under Armour to streamline the Builder brand, as well as establishing an online presence through Social Media interaction to reach quality prospective apprentice-athletes locally and regionally.
With these efforts, new and exciting opportunities have formed as The Apprentice School is officially an inaugural member of the recently formed Eastern Metro Athletic Conference (EMAC). The football program recently joined the NCFA, giving the school an official national football organization to help with scheduling challenges, while offering apprentice-athletes and coach’s additional recognition. This opportunity will also provide for possible postseason competition; also a first in AS school history.
“I’m extremely excited of the strides we are making in our Athletics Department. As we continue building relationships with the EMAC, NCFA and the USCAA, the future looks bright for Builder Athletics. These partnerships will further establish The Apprentice School as a premier small college athletics program nationally.”
Allen is a graduate of Chowan University in Murfreesboro, NC, where he was a two-year letterman in Men’s Basketball. He served as co-captain and held two school records for three-point percentage in a season (46.3%) and three-pointers made in a game (6).
Upon graduation, Allen spent six years coaching men's basketball at the college level, with stops as an assistant coach at Chowan University, Indiana State University, Lincoln Trail College (IL), and Maryville College (TN).
