Wrestling Team Takes Third Straight USCAA National Invitational Crown

APPRENTICE FINISH: 1st out of 9 teams

ON THE MAT: The Apprentice School wrestling team pulled off a three-peat on Sunday afternoon as the Builders captured their third straight U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Invitational Championship held at Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State University.

The Builders scored 188.5 points to capture its third straight crown in the nine-team event.  Alfred State was second (146.5) with West Virginia Tech (122) coming in third. Apprentice School pulled off five champions, had nine finalists and put 16 of 17 wrestlers in the top six in their weight class.

Sophomore Shane Smith started the championship run with a 3-0 record at 125 pounds.  He opened with a win by tech fall over Nick Mears of Alfred State (22-7) and then decisioned Aaron Doll of Penn College (7-4) to make the finals.  In the championship, he won by fall over teammate Rob Styron in 43 seconds.  Styron made the finals with a pair of wins by fall over Ethan Livernash (:47) and Austin Keough (2:56) both of Alfred State.

Freshman Ty Watkins won the 141 pound weight class by going 3-0 with two wins by fall.  Those two falls put him into the finals as he pinned Wendell Rubright of Penn State Beaver (2:24) and Devon Steele of West Virginia Tech (2:20) to advance to the finals.  In the championship he scored a major decision win over Andrew Mellott of Penn State Mont Alto 11-3.

Junior Sterling Briscoe won three matches to win the 149 pound weight class.  The Virginia Beach native opened with a 9-2 decision over Kyle Sunseri of Penn College and then won by fall in 2:51 over Cody Marriott of Alfred State.  In the final, he faced teammate Cruz Garcia and won by an 8-0 major decision.  Garcia advanced with decision wins over Cesar Gonzalez of Penn College (3-0) and Tyler Warner of Penn State Mont Alto (4-3).

Sophomore Philip Porto went 3-0 at 174 with two wins by fall to capture that bracket.  He opened with a win in 4:56 over Matt Rivera of Penn State DuBois.  In the semifinals, he scored a wild 17-14 decision over Colton Rowe of West Virginia Tech to make the finals.  For the championship, he won by fall over Ryan Terwilliger of Penn State DuBois in 3:38.

Junior Ian Jones won the heavyweight title with a pair of wins by fall.  After a bye in the first round, he won in 3:04 over Dan Ognibene of Alfred State.  In the final, he won in 3:24 over Nathan Spinetti of Penn State Fayette.


  • This makes the third team title for the Builders – increasing its team score each year (2012-169 pts; 2013-176 pts; 2014-188 pts)
  • Finishing second was Styron, Derek Burhenn (133), Garcia, Patrik Foxworth (157) and Josh Rodriguez (197).  Taking third at 235 was Kyle Cox.
  • A pair of fifth place finishes for the Builders were by Chris Kennedy (157) and Dan Henson (165); while two finished sixth by Kyle Lowry (157) and CW Sorey (184).
  • Jones became the first three-time USCAA National Invitational Champion for the Builders with his win on Sunday.
  • The five champions is the second most for the Builders in four appearances at the USCAA National Invitational.  In 2011, they won six championships in the event that did not do a team score.

NEXT UP – Ferrum College

The Builders are now off until February 21 when they'll face Ferrum College in Ferrum, Va.  These teams met in the Virginia Duals on January 11 and Ferrum took a 32-10 win.
